Antigua Sailing School- Cruising and Passage Making Courses

Antigua Sail Week

April 20-26, 2008

What better way to make new friends than sailing the southeast trades around the Caribbean islands? In this 6 day sailing adventure there will be centuries old romantic ruins, snorkeling through waters turquoise green and raising lush volcanic islands up from the horizon.

The trip will begin Saturday with a sleep aboard the yacht in Jolly Harbour on Antigua. Guests will meet and enjoy the bright blue waters and the beach at nearby Morris Bay, and have the ability to unwind at some of the excellent restaurants and pubs close in.

Sunday is the departure day, after provisions arrive we'll set sail around Antigua to anchor in Nelson's Shipyard, a cobble stoned 17th century royal navy works yard, converted into a romantic and scenic yacht port. Overlooking English Harbour and Nelson's Shipyard are the spectacular Shirley Heights which draws revelers of all walks to it's party by offering an amazing sunset view along with a barbeque and some hip swing'n roots reggae tunes.

After Sunday night we will set sail over the briny blue to nearby Guadeloupe, which towers majestically as you approach, beckoning with alluring French cuisine, fresh local gourmet coffee, and cloud scraping jungle mountains. Guadeloupe with a population of 330 000 is one of the most cosmopolitan locations in the Caribbean offering both secluded anchorages and excellent shopping in local markets resplendent with colorful fruits and exotic clothes and of course the renowned, island distilled "rhum".

Weather and mood dependant secluded anchorages or lively harbours may be found around Guadeloupe. And of course on the beaches, the French dress code is welcome...

Wednesday should see a day of relaxation, sailing to the quiet and picturesque Isles des Saints, where the little town of Bourg des Saintes always seems to have a carnival procession in the evening. There are plenty of sun drenched shores waiting for your shadow, and of course the water is always "just perfect".

Thursday is a southerly sail through time to Prince Rupert Bay on Dominica. The island of Dominica is wild and fertile with some of the friendliest locals you'll meet in the Caribbean. There is an old fort overlooking the bay and quite often an old style square rigger in the harbour. It's a perfect opportunity to take a day hike guided by a local character into the riotous jungle surrounded by parrots, iguanas and other jungle flora and fauna.

At this point we will turn our way downwind and ride the trades back up the island chain, counting stories and memories as we sail past the familiar hills and harbours. Guadeloupe will host us again Friday night for a last hurrah before the reach back up to Jolly Harbour's safe haven for Saturday in Antigua.
