Basic Coastal Cruising

Basic Cruising; ASA Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

Prerequisite: Basic Keelboat Certificate

Offered as a one day supplemental course to Basic Keelboat this course is an introduction to our Live Aboard Cruising course and will expose students to navigation, anchoring, chart reading and solo sailing.  Students may add a second day to fulfill the requirements for the second certification level: Basic Coastal Cruising.

Live Aboard Cruising

(Bareboat Cruising Certification; Basic Cruising Certification also available)

Course Information and Rates

This course is designed to instill complete confidence in captaining a bigger (+38') sailboat. Bareboating is not necessarily difficult to do, if you want to do it with comfort and confidence, then you will want to take this course. Mixed in with all of the facets to big boat cruising is a different anchorage every night, camaraderie with those who are on board for the same reason you are, and ideal sailing conditions.

Course Structure

Depending on the number of students, 38-50 foot boats are used to teach this course. The course begins on Monday with boat briefing and provisioning and finishes on Saturday.

Tuition

The tuition rate for the group Live Aboard Cruising course (maximum 4 students) is $1,995 per person (May- October); $2,195 per person (November -April). Rate includes the Bareboat Cruising text, first night hotel accommodations, cruising permit, provisioning for 5 days (5 breakfasts; 4 lunches; 3 dinners; snacks and starter kit); US Sailing/ASA Bareboat Certification fee.

There is a 2 person enrollment minimum for this course. Singles, please inquire about rates and availability in our open enrollment courses.

Bareboat Preparation

Course Structure

This course is a four day course, starting on Tuesday and finishing on Friday.

In Bareboat Preparation you learn the same skills taught in Live Aboard Cruising course on a 35-45' foot yacht, sailing 4-5 hours per day. Students opt for this course if they prefer shoreside accommodations for the evening as opposed to sleeping on board.

Mastered skills include: navigation, crew over boards, sail trim and sail shape, mechanical and electrical systems, and anchoring.

There is a 2 person minimum enrollment for this course.

Coastal Passage Making

(USSA Passage Making Certification)

Course Structure

This course is a 6 day/5 night course, starting on Monday and finishing on Saturday.

CPM challenges those students who have taken Basic Keelboat and Live Aboard Cruising or have the equivalent qualifications. Everything you learned from the aforementioned courses is put to use along with new skills you master through this course. Some of these skills include night time approaches to anchorages, night time man overboards, full on navigation, lights at night, standing watches, proper customs and immigration procedures, and all of the safety items one must know when sailing out of sight of land. Along with the ongoing studies we visit St. Martin and St. Barths, some of the most intriguing islands in the Caribbean.  Please check schedule for additional itineraries offered. 

The tuition rate for the group Coastal Passage Making course is $2,395, December - June. Rate includes the Passage Making text, first night hotel accommodations, cruising permit, provisioning for 5 days (5 breakfasts; 4 lunches; 2 dinners; snacks and starter kit); US Sailing Passage Making Certification or ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising fee.
