Planned Itinerary

September 3  Arrive to Us.  Sleep aboard your training yacht.

Begin your journey on Narragansett’s 2nd largest island and home to the lovely town of Jamestown, RI. Rich in history having been visited by Italian navigator, Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, it became a center for fur trading, agriculture and fishing for centuries to follow. Much less busy than it’s neighbor to the east (Newport) Jamestown retains its quaintness with several small shops, restaurants and local entertainment. Portions of several movies have been filmed in and around Jamestown, including Wind, Me, Myself & Irene, American General, Evening, Dan in Real Life, Moonrise Kingdom, and Irrational Man.

Skills Covered:

September 4 Jamestown, RI to Cuttyhunk, MA (Approx 5 hours)

Perhaps New England’s first English settlement, Cuttyhunk was occupied with a small fort built by Bartholomew Gosnold’s expedition in 1602. They planned to develop sassafras, which was a valuable crop in Europe at the time. Sited at the very end of the Elizabeth Islands, it was originally known as ‘Poocuohhunkkunnah’ named by the native Wampanoag’s; meaning ‘Land’s End’. After entering from the north through a very narrow inlet Cuttyhunk opens up into a lovely salt pond harbor where many transient boaters come for an evening’s rest. If you go ashore and walk to the island top you can enjoy the priceless view east across Vineyard Sound to Gay Head, or west across Buzzards Bay to the mainland.

Skills Covered:

September 5 Cuttyhunk, MA to Menemsha to Hadley Harbor  (Approx 5 hrs)

Next travel through Quick’s Hole and across the Vineyard Sound to Menemsha for lunch ‘in the rough’. You may recognize scenes from the films ‘Popeye’ with Robin Williams and ‘Sabrina’ with Harrison Ford while you’re there. Indulge yourself with fresh seafood at Larsen’s - direct from the boats, to the pot, to your plate. Bring your own wine and glasses though! Menemsha is a dry town.

After lunch head north then west past Wood’s Hole Research Center at the top of the Elizabeth’s to a tranquil hideaway gem you’ll never forget – Hadley’s Harbor. Anchor in front of the Forbe’s Mansion and enjoy relaxing, swimming and adventuring ashore. It’s the perfect place to recharge and perhaps to forget.

Skills Covered:

September 6 Hadley Harbor to Provincetown, MA (Approx 8 hrs)

Next we'll saill north through Buzzards Bay and the Cape Cod Canal, past Massachusetts Maritime Academy and under the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. September 7 Provincetown to Scituate, MA (Approx 6 hrs)

Situated on Boston’s North Shore in Essex County, and founded in 1629, its one of America’s oldest and most influential cities. For a period it was America’s most affluent city during the British occupation of Boston in the mid 1700’s. Visit the Witch House, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s home on the waterfront where he wrote the Scarlett Letter and the House of Seven Gables just next door. A must see, visit the Peabody Museum with its huge collection of global art and artifacts - all within walking distance to the port.
